Middle East and Africa Government Affairs Director

The Company

Multinational pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company 

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Develop and deliver MEA Government Affairs Strategy
  • Develop knowledge base and understanding of current and potential future policy changes in MEA and implications for the company businesses
  • Represent the company within/across the international political/industry communities with regards to MEA
  • Developing and delivering model that integrates public policy / TA / market access and wider commercial priorities incl Athe company ’s vaccines portfolio, into strategic GA engagement and platforms
  • Developing GA capability across the key markets/areas
  • Manage relationships across Government and Corporate Affairs and related business functions (market access, communications, business development, legal etc) and ensure internal alignment and delivery of common messages for MEA Area
  • Advise MEA Country Presidents, Government Affairs Directors and Head of Corporate Affairs International on political matters
  • Update regional/global HQ on local developments in a timely manner
  • Influencing public policy and resulting legislation/regulation
  • Act as the company Ambassador, building sound and stable relationships with key market stakeholders for MEA Area
  • Support development and implementation of Government Affairs country plans in MEA Area
  • Participate in and where required to lead above-country issue management teams for MEA Area
  • Functional leadership
  • Align strategy and execution of GA activities across MEA LT, Senior Executive Teams and Corporate Affairs Leadership Team

Key Performance Indicators

  • Quality of the company relationships with key political stakeholders
  • Development and endorsement of cross-functional GA strategy, including environmental analysis, identification of priority issues, the company positions and action plans
  • Support achieving key milestones in execution of country GA strategy
  • Internal and external recognition as thought leader, quality of advice on all local political matters
  • Timely and adequate response to unforeseen issues

Essential requirements:

  • Leadership experience of strategic projects of global significance at large multinational company
  • Strong knowledge of what is required to succeed in Emerging Markets and MEA specifically
  • Understanding of how to leverage Sustainability projects and corporate footprint/investments to shape the external environment to ensure commercial success.
  • Evidence of the ability to pull together diverse teams over whom they have no line management responsibility
  • Experience of successful influencing cross functionally, cross-culturally and across-brands/therapy area
  • Track record of influencing externally to shape the environment to support commercial and corporate interests
  • Demonstrated knowledge and very wide understanding of global business context: almost certainly having held a number of diverse roles including outside home country
  • An excellent communicator; evidence of strong independence and innovative seeker of strategic solutions; a strongly conceptual thinker; forward looking
  • Master’s degree
